JCDecaux UK has been recognised for its outstanding environmental achievements in the 2026 International Green Apple Environment Awards for its work refurbishing Nottingham City Council’s bus shelters.
Selected from more than 700 entries worldwide, JCDecaux UK has secured its place among this year's leading examples of environmental best practice. The Green Apple Awards recognise organisations that are committed to significantly contributing to environmental improvement through innovation and measurable action. This latest achievement places JCDecaux among organisations demonstrating leadership in environmental sustainability.

This project involved the large-scale refurbishment of Nottingham City Council’s bus shelters, delivered in partnership with Nottingham City Council and the East Midlands Authority. All 815 existing bus shelters were upgraded through a refurbishment first approach that prioritised reuse, life extension and energy efficiency rather than removal and replacement with newly manufactured assets.
Chris CollinsThe long-standing partnership between JCDecaux, Nottingham City Council and the East Midlands Authority has seen us work closely together to provide high-quality bus shelters for the people of Nottingham and support Nottingham’s sustainability goals. The refurbishment programme exemplifies circular economy innovation and because of the high-quality and rigorous maintenance of our bus shelters we could focus on life extension and energy efficiency and avoid the greater environmental impact of replacement. It’s a showcase of what can be achieved from great partnerships and a focus on sustainability.

JCDecaux was awarded a new 15-year bus shelter and free-standing digital advertising contract by Nottingham City Council in March. As well as the bus shelter refurbishment, the contract included the introduction of smart technology benefits like free public Wi-Fi and real-time air quality monitoring – while also providing the council with income from digital advertising screens.
JCDecaux is the leading sustainable media owner and is committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 73% and downstream Scope 3 emissions by 46% by 2030 (compared with 2019 levels). By 2050, JCDecaux is targeting a 90% absolute reduction across all scopes to reach net zero carbon.
The Green Apple Awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-profit organisation founded in 1994 to reward and promote environmental excellence worldwide. The awards will be celebrated at a prestigious awards ceremony in the House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, London in November this year.
