JCDecaux and partners bring refurbished bus shelters to Nottingham's streets

Nottingham’s citizens are enjoying the benefit of the city’s refurbished bus shelters along with free Wi-Fi in the city centre, thanks to the partnership between JCDecaux, Nottingham City Council and the East Midlands Authority that spans three decades.

All 830 bus shelters have been totally refurbished. They have been hand-painted in Nottingham green and rebranded in the city’s ‘Robin Hood Network’ livery, with benches and glass replaced and the addition of energy-efficient LED lighting – all helping to work towards the city’s carbon-neutral goals. JCDecaux has introduced ‘smart city’ tech to the city centre, providing free public Wi-Fi and air-quality monitors, enabling the council to access real-time air quality information across the city via an app – all funded by advertising across the digital screens.

I’m pleased to see more than 800 bus shelters refurbished across Nottingham. Reliable, welcoming public transport infrastructure matters to people’s everyday journeys, and this long-term partnership with Nottingham City Council and JCDecaux demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together. The refurbished shelters will help create a more welcoming environment for passengers and support our ambition to build a greener, better-connected region by making buses an even more attractive option for residents and visitors.

Claire Ward

Mayor of the East Midlands

The council has a longstanding relationship with JCDecaux which goes back many years, and I think this is a key reason why we work well together. Digital screens provide the opportunity for public messaging as well as advertising space for local and national companies, which also delivers important extra income for the council. We’ve been working with JCDecaux for over 20 years for the maintenance of our bus shelters, so it’s great to see this additional investment in making a more pleasant journey experience for all the people who use Nottingham’s buses.

Neghat Khan

Leader of Nottingham City Council

Our partnership with Nottingham City Council has lasted almost three decades. We absolutely value the trust they place in us to operate and maintain all the bus shelters and advertising units that serve the community of Nottingham at no cost to Nottingham.

Chris Collins

co-CEO, JCDecaux UK

Aligned with the council’s climate strategy, the high-quality design and robust maintenance of JCDecaux’s bus shelters have enabled them to be refurbished – reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 90% compared with the installation of replacement street furniture. JCDecaux is also funding a range of important environmental and community initiatives, paid for by the advertising network. This includes financial support for the Mayor’s Charity, local community group funding as well as supporting university research projects and city-wide biodiversity initiatives such as tree-planting.
