Holocaust Memorial Day is marked in the UK with a national ‘Light the darkness’ moment: people across the country light candles in their windows at 4pm on 27 January.
Holocaust Memorial Day is the international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups and during more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. The Community Channel is proud to be supporting Holocaust Memorial Day, using the power of the public screen to create this powerful reminder across our premium towers' portfolio. Iconic media space includes, The M4 Torch, The Putney Tower, The West Cross Tower and The Edinburgh Arch.
The message invites people to safely light a candle and put it in their window at 4pm as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s national ‘Light the darkness’ moment. Encouraging passers-by “to remember those who were murdered for who they were” and “to stand against hatred and prejudice today.”
Olivia Marks-Woldman OBEEach year on Holocaust Memorial Day, we come together to remember and to learn from genocide for a better future. Seeing many of the UK’s most iconic landmarks and screens light up in purple at the same time that people across the country are lighting candles in their windows at home is a poignant reminder of the responsibility that we all have to challenge hatred and prejudice today. We are immensely grateful to every landmark that is taking part, as well as to our generous supporters at Ocean Outdoors and JCDecaux for their encouraging people to light the darkness.
